We have all once said That violets are blue, Roses are red And I will always love you. And roses are red, That is very true, But violets are purple And definitely not blue. Everyone indeed knows that violets are purple, But there is one thing we’ve all missed: That in ancient history, ‘Purple’ did not exist. Violet was a word for a flower Before the colour was known, And it was closest to blue, And it created a poem that left minds blown. For us the usage is strange, But it’s a rhyme so old, And for verses of romance, The sound is gold. So even though it looks weird, And the knowledge is off, The writer isn’t a fool, ‘Cause it has brought a lot of people love.
