Jesse Marechal – ‘On Being Asked for a War Poem’

(In 1915 W.B. Yeats was asked to write a war poem to help raise funds for WWI. He declined. However, he was sparked to write “On Being Asked for a War Poem”, questioning his right to speak on such events.)

In trenches cold, the soldiers fight
With fear and pain through endless nights
The guns are loud, the skies are grey
As dreams of peace fade far away
They write their words with hearts so sore
Of war they hope they’ll see no more.
